We discussed the implications of a roll over. Loss of power, communications, and navigation. The risk of losing the mast and its implications. We also discussed evacuation plans like grabbing the lifeboat and emergency grab bag with the satellite telephone and EPIRB (emergency locator beacon) in it. Also very importantly, the need to tie the lifeboat to the yacht before throwing it over...

The People

Kevin Lidgard Owner and skipper of "Iduno"

Travelift Manager at West Park Marina in Auckland. I have enjoyed ocean racing and cruising all my life. My parents have provided my brother and I with special lives. As kids we cruised the Pacific Islands in 'Taonui'. Taonui was a 40ft yacht Dad had designed and built with a lot of help from Mum. Mum turned out to be an expert navigator. My brother Duthie and I have both designed and built several yachts and have raced and cruised these internationally...

The Boat

'Iduno' was designed by Richard Hartley (NZ) in 1970.  She was designed as a 'cruiser-racer'.  Racing normally consisted of club cruising races where the crews were often family.  She was lovingly crafted by Leon La Cassie, a builder/ joiner, out of 8mm double diagonal Kaihikatea fibre-glassed over.

I recall her sailing about the Hauraki Gulf during my youth.  Easily recognisable because of her orange hull colour.  My grandfather Fred Lidgard, a well-known boat builder, would have 'turned in his grave' seeing an orange yacht!  Fred maintained that you could paint a yacht any colour - as long as it was white!  Fred can now R.I.P., as I have now painted her white with grey decks, blue stripe and red bottom. How conservative is that?

I purchased 'Iduno' in 2002. She was purchased from the deceased estate of Dave Anderson - North Auckland.  Dave was unfortunately lost at sea from another yacht some years prior.  I had met Dave on occasion as we were mutual friends of the late Eric Wing.  Dave had sailed 'Iduno' in the Round-the-North two-handed Eric Wing Memorial race in 1996.  I also competed in this Memorial race and was impressed by the performance of 'Iduno'.  Dave later sailed 'Iduno' in the Tonga rally.

In 2001 Kim Stewart and I had raced our Cavalier 32 'Seeadler' to Fiji winning the Cruising division. Upon our return we sold 'Seeadler' after a blood rush! (we loved that boat) Suddenly we realized 'Seeadler' was not going to be so easy to replace and after a frustrating search we drove to the Weiti River where we discovered 'Iduno' looking sad and lost. We knew we were in for a big job restoring her but Kim and I are good at rolling up our sleeves. Finally 'Iduno' has been restored to her former glory. This adventure will start with a race from Onerahi (Whangarei, NZ) to Port Vila, Vanuatu starting at noon on the Wednesday, 20th June, 2007.

You can find more pictures of our yacht Iduno here.

The Lidgard Story

Kevin's parents John and Heather Lidgard are well known for their yachting adventures (see John's book 'It's in the Blood').

John, a yacht designer and builder, and Heather, a yachtswoman and navigator, cruised and raced extensively and as Kevin and his brother Duthie grew up they 'caught the bug' for ocean racing and cruising. Kevin and Duthie have both designed and built numerous racing and cruising yachts. In 2001 Kevin and partner Kim won the shorthanded class of the Auckland to Fiji race....
